What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, often referred to as a “cap”, is a custom-made restoration that covers the entirety of the tooth above the gum line. Its purpose is twofold: to restore the tooth’s strength and improve its appearance. Crafted from various materials such as porcelain, ceramic, resin, or metal, crowns are used to address damaged, decayed, or aesthetically displeasing teeth, ensuring not just functionality but also a return to their natural look.

Why Consider a Dental Crown?

There are myriad reasons you might need a dental crown:

  • Protecting a weak tooth from further damage or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.
  • Restoring a broken tooth or a severely worn down tooth.
  • Covering and supporting a tooth with a large filling.
  • Anchoring a dental bridge.
  • Enhancing cosmetic appearance by covering misshapen or severely discolored teeth.

Benefits Of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns offer various advantages:

  • Strength & Functionality: They restore the tooth’s strength, functionality, and structure, allowing you to eat and speak comfortably.

  • Appearance: Crowns are crafted to match the color, size, and shape of your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless fit and appearance.

  • Protection: They shield a vulnerable tooth from further damage or decay.

  • Long-lasting: With proper care, crowns can serve you for many years.

Do You Offer Same-Day Dental Crowns?

One of the hallmarks of our service at Dental Wise is the use of CEREC technology for dental crowns. This advanced tech allows us to create your custom-made crown right here in our clinic, in a single visit. No second appointment, no wait. Here’s why this matters

  • Creation Time: Traditional crowns typically require multiple visits, as the crown needs to be crafted in an external lab. CEREC crowns utilize advanced CAD/CAM technology, enabling the design and creation of your crown right in our office – often within a single appointment. This means you walk out of the practice with a restored smile!

  • Impression Method: Traditional crowns often involve messy impression materials. In contrast, CEREC crowns use a digital scan, making the process cleaner and more comfortable.

  • Temporary Crowns: While waiting for a traditional crown, patients often wear a temporary one, which can be less comfortable. CEREC crowns eliminate this waiting period, meaning no need for temporary solutions.

  • High-Quality Material: CEREC crowns are made of durable ceramic that mimics the natural look of your teeth.

Understanding the Dental Crown Procedure

Being informed about what to expect can take away a lot of the anxiety. Here’s a brief rundown of how it goes:

  1. Initial Assessment: Dr. Manny Rodriguez will first examine the affected tooth and may take X-rays.

  2. Preparing the Tooth: The tooth will be reshaped to make space for the crown. After which, an impression will be made – either with a mold or digitally, in the case of CEREC crowns.

  3. Designing the Crown: With CEREC, Dr. Rodriguez will design the crown right in front of you, using advanced CAD/CAM technology.

  4. Placing the Crown: The ceramic crown is then crafted and placed onto your reshaped tooth, ensuring a snug and comfortable fit.

Caring For Your Dental Crowns

Like your natural teeth, your new crown demands care. Regular brushing, flossing, and routine check-ups at Dental Wise will ensure your crown remains in tip-top shape. Avoid hard foods that can damage the crown, and inform Dr. Rodriguez if you feel any discomfort or bite issues.
